Mercer on Mission, 2010

Mercer on Mission / KUTANA combines service learning, academic study, cross-cultural encounter and environmental study in an intensive, three week format. This year's program featured interaction with the Sisit community in West Pokot centered around water and sanitation.

Installation of a water turbine unit for pumping water over 1.2 km (and 400 feet up!) from a river source and construction of bio sand filters with the community were among several ways Mercer students engaged in service learning.

The seemingly simple solution of provision of potable water can often be a technically challenging, time consuming and expensive propostion (see Water in Sisit ).  Africa Exchange is proud to host Mercer on Mission and looks forward to many more iterations of this example of "KUTANA."
